- This is my original species, and since its October I decided to make a lovely batch to share! Each one comes with its own color pallet, and were made on a new base I created just for them (that will only be used for Mark Shades).

The Mark Shade Species

Species Info
A horse like creature from the Mirror realm, who must consume the Energy created through the use of another being's talent and passion to allow themselves to survive. This can be done by physically eating the part of the body the talent or passion is connected to (An artists hands | In MLP-verse it would be the area with the Cutie mark), or by stealing their talent via psychic vampirism (In MLP-verse this makes the Cutie mark fade and disappear). They can live with out doing harm to a others by only taking small amounts of energy from multiple sources, but! If they can over power and out do another at their own talent, they can take it as their own forever. This allows a Mark Shade to gain power by taking on talents and hoarding them over years, while not all feel the urge for this; the greed of some make them fairly dangerous. Each Mark Shad has taste for different passions and talents, getting a higher energy boost when consuming what they like best. One that loves the taste of dancing, will always be happiest to eat a dancers energy; or steel a dancing talent/passion. Mark Shades have been known to make pacts with other species before, agreeing that in trade for them being allowed to feed on an individual that they will use their own talents in assistance to the one feeding them. As they become hungry they will crack up the leg at the split of the hoof until their full physical form shatters from being cracked and they get thrown back into the mirror Realm (Some cracking on a Mark Shade is normal as few are ever fully sated). Marks Shade born out of a union with a material realm being can not be forced into the Mirror realm through cracking, it instead only causing them to become ill as they reach their max.

Marks Shade have four ears, cloven hooves, a muscular short tail, seven eyes (Three large, four small), and large membrane wings. Their Coats are generally three toned, and all Mark Shades have some form of pattern that leaves stripe like marks along the coat and/or wings that can be one to three colors. Their manes can be normal hair (straight, curly, or any type), spikes or Spines, or elemental in nature; able to take on glowing and shimmers in rarer cases. The eyes have two slit like pupils, one allowing them to see the material plane and the other allowing to see the mirror plane (they can gift their mirror plane sight though a pact). The coats, marks, mane, and eyes can be any color. While they do come in many sizes and some do have horns, all mark shades have the same general features.

When breeding to other species the infant will always either be directly the parent species, or directly a Mark Shade; as the species traits being half breed would kill the infant as its body became trapped in the void between the material and mirror realm. When two Mark Shades breed their offspring will be born in the mirror realm, and unable to enter the material realm for several months; their parents feeding them off the talents/passions they have stored in their being until then (often giving up fully at least one power to infant). Once old enough to trail after mom or Dad or both, the infant can start feeding on its one; though will not be able to snatch talents/passions until it is a fully mature adult.

Mark Shades can no hold a glamor like a Changling, able to take on the form of a normal individual of a horse like species to hide what they really are. They will normally take on a glamor to fit in with the most common species of the right shape around them, and have even taken on non sentient forms in some records. They always retain all their powers even when hidden, able to fly even when they have a wingless form being one example. A Mark shade can switch in and out of this with no stress or use of energy, but a starving Mark Shade will have to struggle to keep themselves hidden; and possibly need to retreat to hide in the mirror realm.

Some do have magic as they have consumed the magical talents of others, but it is uncommon that they fully master their use unless they were born with magical influence (after shown in glowing markings or Mane).

FAQ

Question: "So? Being their nature? Are all mark shades evil with cruel or mean personalities?"
Answer: That falls on the owner. A Mark Shade can be a terrible monster, but it could also just as easily be a shy and gentle being that is almost afraid to ask to feed as it doesn't like hurting people. They were not made to be 'Good' or 'Evil' the way they feed is simply the way they feed; like you wouldn't call a wolf evil for needing to feed by killing a deer. Its the character that makes an Evil or Good Mark Shade, not the species! (Answering this pre-hand as I see it come up often enough to feel like making a notation :3)
